2 brothers handed 8-year jail terms each for robbery

AMMAN — The Court of Cassation upheld a May State Security Court (SSC) ruling, sentencing two brothers to eight years in prison each after convicting them of forming a gang to rob businesses in Amman in early 2019.

The court declared the defendants guilty of forming a gang to rob establishments and handed them 10-year prison terms each.

However, the SSC decided to reduce the sentence to eight years in prison for each of the two defendants “to give them a second chance in life to correct their paths”.

Court papers said the defendants decided to make quick cash by robbing businesses in Amman and targeted a women’s social organisation in Wadi Seer.

On January 6, 2019, the two entered the organisation and robbed it of around JD2,500, court papers said.

Few weeks later, the two targeted another social organisation in the area and escaped with JD400, the court said.

The two defendants were arrested by police few weeks later after DNA samples from the crime scene matched one of the defendants, the court papers added.

The defendants, through their lawyer, contested the court’s ruling arguing that the “the prosecution failed to provide solid evidence in the case”.

However, the higher court ruled that the Criminal Court followed the proper procedures and the defendants deserved the verdict they had received.
