1990–2025: Kazakhstan’s journey of sovereignty, youthful vision

AMMAN — In 1990, a defining moment reshaped Central Asia’s political map. From the vast steppe of Eurasia emerged the Republic of Kazakhstan, young nation determined to chart its destiny and give voice to its independent identity.

Thirty-five years later, that moment still echoes through the country’s spirit. On October 25, Kazakhstan marks the 35th anniversary of the Declaration of State Sovereignty, a milestone that symbolises both the birth of statehood and the renewal of its vision for the future.

First adopted in 1990, the Declaration established the foundations of territorial integrity, self-determination, and cultural identity. In 2022, under the leadership of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Republic Day regained its status as a national holiday, reaffirming Kazakhstan’s enduring belief in sovereignty, unity, and progress.

For young Kazakhs, Republic Day is more than a remembrance of history; it is a living dialogue between generations. The day unites the memories of those who fought for sovereignty with the ambitions of those who now define its meaning. It bridges legacy and innovation, turning remembrance into renewal.

“Our independence is the foundation of everything we do. Republic Day reminds us that our generation must carry this legacy forward,” said Aidar, a young journalist from Almaty.

Across cities and towns, the celebration unfolds in vibrant, modern forms, concerts, exhibitions, flash mobs, and digital stories that reinterpret patriotism through creativity. On social media, young citizens share reels and reflections, wrapped in the blue and gold of their flag, their voices merging into a collective anthem of pride.

“Language and culture are what make us unique. I’m proud to share Kazakh traditions with the world, that’s what Republic Day means to me,” said Yeldana, a student from Astana.

The cultural tapestry of Kazakhstan, woven from many ethnicities and languages, stands as both heritage and horizon. Diversity, once a challenge of identity, has become a cornerstone of unity. On today’s Republic Day, unity is expressed not through speeches, but through shared experiences that celebrate coexistence.

“We already have our foundation, Now it’s our turn to build upon it with ideas, innovation, and cooperation,” said Bakhytbek, an IT developer from Astana.

For the youth, independence is not an event of the past but a mission of the present , one that calls for progress in technology, sustainability, and creative industries. Their vision of Kazakhstan is dynamic, green, and globally connected, yet rooted deeply in the values of respect, harmony, and cultural pride.

“When I see people from all walks of life celebrating together, I feel that we’re one family, that’s what independence truly means,” said Kamshat, a volunteer from Shymkent.

As Kazakhstan marks 35 years of sovereignty, its story continues to evolve, from declaration to dialogue, from the aspirations of 1990 to the confidence of 2025. Independence, once a milestone, has become a journey renewed by each generation’s imagination.

From the boundless steppe to the rising skyline, Republic Day tells astory of a nation that found its true strength in unity, devirsity, and in the enduring belief that the future is built through knowledge, will , and hope.
