AMMAN — Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Nasser Shraideh and Director of the French Agency for Development (AFD) office in Amman Luc Le Cabellec on Tuesday signed a grant agreement worth 16.8 million euros to support the development of a new wastewater collection and treatment project in Ramtha District and Hauran, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
The EU will provide the grant through the Neighbourhood Investment Platform (NIP) as part of a 98.6-million-euro financing package.
According to an AFD statement, the project aims to increase the capacity of wastewater collection and treatment in the existing sewage system to later expand to cover unserved areas in Ramtha District.
The wastewater project in Ramtha and Hauran will serve 180,000 people by the end of 2030, with a 61 per cent increase in the number of beneficiaries of sanitation services in the region.
The expansion of the Ramtha treatment plant will also be implemented in two phases to reach a production capacity of 22,000 cubic metres per day compared with the current capacity of 5,400 cubic metres to benefit the agricultural sector in the Jordan Valley.
The project includes the construction of a sewage treatment plant with a capacity of 11,000 cubic metres per day and a power plant that uses biogas resulting from the treatment process.
