AMMAN — The number of electronic wallets in Jordan went from 1.91 million wallets in September to 1.98 million wallets in October, an increase of 3.7 per cent, according to a report issued by the Jordanian Payment and Clearing Company (JOPACC).
The report showed that 1.36 million transactions were conducted through mobile payment applications in October, compared with only 950,000 transactions in September, which is an increase of 43.2 per cent.
The value of October transactions amounted to JD173 million, an increase of 38.4 per cent, compared with JD125 million in September, according to the report.
The report indicated that 96.4 per cent of these transactions were carried out as money transfers and 2.4 per cent were carried out as withdrawals.
The reported highlighted that 62.1 per cent of e-wallet owners are males, an equivalent of 1.22 million people, while 37.9 per cent of owners are females, an equivalent of 740,000 people.
Broken down by age bracket, 5,000 people under 18 use e-wallets, compared with 664,000 people aged 18 to 30, 458,000 aged 31 to 40 and 344,000 people aged 41 to 50.
Additionally, 213,000 users are aged 51 to 60 years, 72,000 are aged 61 to 70, 30,000 are aged 71 to 80 and 9,000 are aged 81 to 90.
On January 16, 2017, the Central Bank of Jordan, along with 25 commercial banks operating in Jordan, agreed to establish the JOPACC with an initial capital investment of JD12 million.
