DOHA — The 11th edition of the World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE), a global platform for innovation in education, kicks off on Tuesday in Doha, hosting over 100 local, regional and international experts.

WISE, which is taking place at the Qatar National Convention Centre, was founded in 2009 by Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development (QF) under the leadership of its chairperson, Sheikha Moza bint Nasser.

This year’s theme is “Creative Fluency: Human Flourishing in the Age of AI”, according to a statement by QF sent to The Jordan Times.

“The emergence of AI challenges our traditional view of creativity and raises important questions about education’s future,” the statement said.

It explained that this theme explores the “intricate” connection between humans and the evolving AI landscape, envisioning a future where AI supports rather than competes with human potential.

“In the realm of education, this theme encourages stakeholders to thoughtfully integrate AI to enhance learning, stimulate creativity, and prepare the next generation for a future closely intertwined with AI,” it added.

The statement also noted that the summit is expected to explore topics such as computational literacy, personalised learning, AI-integrated teaching approaches and equity issues in emerging educational technologies worldwide.

CEO of WISE, Stavros N. Yiannouka said: “WISE 11 is a dedicated space where the intersection of human creativity and artificial intelligence will be thoroughly examined. We are bringing together leading experts, educators and innovators from around the world to work hand-in-hand, ensuring that our approach to AI in education centres around the betterment of human lives.”

A spokesperson from QF added: “The WISE Summit remains a beacon for innovation and intellectual discourse in education. This year’s theme aligns perfectly with Qatar Foundation’s mission to cultivate a culture of lifelong learning and creativity. We are honoured to host this pivotal event that resonates with our vision of empowering individuals to adapt and excel in a dynamically evolving world.”

The WISE community includes over 50,000 members across 140 countries. It welcomed over 3,000 international attendees in 2019, while its 2021 edition witnessed the participation of over 2,000 in-person delegates and over 11,000 online participants, according to the QF statement.

The statement said that the 2023 edition of WISE is expected to welcome an audience of around 1,200 delegates attending throughout the day, with up to 2,200 participants expected for the opening and closing sessions.

“WISE 11 is set to bring fresh perspectives and innovative formats like live podcasts and immersive AI experiences. The summit’s core objectives are to deepen understanding of AI, champion inclusive education, empower stakeholders and foster collaborations,” it added.
