AMMAN — Criminal Investigation Department (CID) personnel in the capital on Wednesday night implemented a security operation to crack down on protection rackets at tourist restaurants and night clubs, the Public Security Department (PSD) announced on Thursday.
The operation, implemented in cooperation with the CID’s special taskforce, resulted in arresting 10 people with criminal records, who “are used to committing such crimes in front of restaurants”, according to a statement issued by the PSD’s media centre.
CID agents found one of the apprehended suspects in possession of narcotic pills, while some of them were wanted for cases of theft, weapon possession, drug possession and attempted murder.
The suspects were referred for further questioning, prior to sending them to the concerned judicial authorities.
The PSD called on the public, as well as shop and restaurant owners, not to agree to protection racketeers, and to immediately file complaints against them, for the authorities to take the necessary legal measures against them.
