‘Over 12,000 electricity thefts during January-August period’

AMMAN — Jordanian agencies documented 12,958 alleged electricity thefts during the first eight months of the year, The Energy and Minerals Regulatory Commission (EMRC) chief commissioner, Farouq Hiyari, announced on Wednesday.

Hiyari said that 1,222 lawsuits were filed with the courts during the same period, with courts issuing final rulings for 1,374 (some of which were originally filed before the January-August period), the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The EMRC detected 6,442 of the total cases, the public security and gendarmerie departments 1,845, and electricity distribution companies reported 4,671, Hiyari noted. If convicted, those charged for electricity theft could face imprisonment up to two years, or a fine ranging from JD2,000 to JD10,000, or both.
