Historic UN resolution on women

On October 13, the UN Security Council unanimously adopted Resolution 2242 (2015) at its High Level Review, on the 15th anniversary of Resolution 1325, during its 7,533rd meeting in New York.

After 15 years and as a woman activist I cannot contain my excitement at this groundbreaking development.

But what does that mean?

The resolution on women, peace and security (UNSCR 1325) gave birth to a much-desired UNSC Resolution 2242 that states procedures for the implementation of 1325.

As the implementation of 1325 had been a sticking issue with some countries, including Jordan, 2242 promises that no excuses could be used for non-implementation of 1325.

It has been a hope, nay a dream, of mine to see the day when peace and security prevail and are negotiated and attained with women, and not excluding them, as has been the case and state of world affairs.

I find it my duty to highlight this UNSC resolution to the Jordanian public, to become aware of what that means for women’s rights.

It is about time that the Jordanian government meets its duty towards its women by endorsing first and foremost the draft National Action Plan that was prepared by civil society since 2010 and remains hidden and forgotten in drawers.
