AMMAN — DOOM: The Dark Ages, released on May 15, by id Software and Bethesda Softworks, marks a bold departure from its predecessors. This prequel to DOOM (2016) and DOOM Eternal delves into the Slayer's mediaeval origins, offering a darker, more grounded combat experience.
Unlike the fast-paced action of earlier titles, The Dark Ages introduces a heavier combat style. Players wield the new Shield Saw, a multifunctional weapon that allows for blocking, parrying and brutal takedowns. The arsenal blends traditional DOOM firepower with mediaeval flair—like the Skull Crusher, spiked flails and electrified gauntlets—bringing a gritty, visceral edge to every encounter.
The game's environments are larger and more intricate than ever before. Players explore crumbling castles, haunted forests and ancient warzones, all designed with hidden secrets and vertical traversal in mind. The Shield Saw also doubles as a movement tool, allowing creative navigation through the detailed world.
According to Mohannad Kass, a player, the game needs at least 12 hours to complete the story mode and 15 hours to complete the full game with collectables and secret area.
Narratively, DOOM: The Dark Ages dives into the Slayer's mythos, revealing his rise as humanity's fiercest protector in a hellish mediaeval war. The darker tone is matched by a cinematic presentation and atmospheric world-building, adding depth without slowing the action.
Powered by the id Tech 8 engine, the game boasts stunning visuals and runs smoothly across PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. It’s also available on Xbox Game Pass.
Critically, DOOM: The Dark Ages has received generally favourable reviews. On Metacritic, the game holds an average score of 84, with platform-specific ratings of 85 for PC, 84 for PS5, and 87 for Xbox Series X/S. Critics have praised the game's brutal combat and bold changes, though some noted pacing issues and a slower pace compared to previous entries. Despite these critiques, the game has been lauded for its innovation and engaging gameplay.
