AMMAN — Minister of Industry, Trade and Supply Yarub Qudah on Wednesday met Liam Byrne, a British MP and chair of the House of Commons Business and Trade Committee, to discuss ways to strengthen economic and trade relations between Jordan and the United Kingdom.
The talks focused on enhancing institutional cooperation and addressing challenges to bilateral trade, according to a ministry statement, according to a Ministry of Industry, Trade and Supply statement.
Qudah said Jordan and the UK share deep-rooted historical ties that provide a strong foundation for expanding economic cooperation. He reaffirmed Jordan's commitment to strengthening its economic partnership with Britain and increasing trade and investment for the benefit of both countries.
The minister also stressed the importance of ongoing discussions on simplifying the rules of origin, saying the move would maximise the benefits of the bilateral partnership agreement, improve Jordanian products' access to the British market and enhance their competitiveness.
Qudah also outlined the goals of the Economic Modernisation Vision and Jordan's efforts to improve the business environment through legislative reforms and streamlined procedures aimed at boosting competitiveness and attracting investment.
He highlighted investment opportunities in priority sectors, including industry, energy, mining, information technology and logistics, noting that Jordan's strategic location, skilled workforce and extensive network of free trade agreements enhance its appeal as an investment destination.
The minister also reviewed preparations for the Jordan-Europe Investment Conference, scheduled for November, describing the event as an opportunity to showcase investment prospects in the Kingdom and strengthen partnerships with European and international investors. He invited British companies to participate in the conference and explore opportunities in Jordan.
The two sides also discussed ways to deepen economic cooperation, increase bilateral trade and encourage greater private-sector partnerships, while underscoring the importance of continued coordination on issues of mutual interest.
For his part, Byrne reaffirmed the importance of strengthening economic and trade ties between Jordan and the UK. He stressed the need to facilitate trade and investment flows and expand cooperation between the two countries' business communities to advance shared economic interests, according to the Ministry's statement.
