AMMAN — The value of bounced cheques in Jordan increased to JD103.6 million in May, up from JD72.4 million in April, according to figures released by the Jordan Payments and Clearing Company (JoPACC).
A total of 18,600 cheques were returned during the month. Of these, 6,190 cheques, representing 33.3 per cent and valued at JD36.7 million, were bounced for financial reasons, Al Mamlaka TV reported.
The remaining 12,415 cheques, accounting for 66.7 per cent and worth JD66.9 million, were returned due to technical reasons, according to JoPACC.
The number of circulated cheques rose by 26 per cent in May to 552,000, with a total value of around JD3.33 billion, compared with 438,000 cheques valued at JD3.18 billion in April.
The data also showed that bounced cheques accounted for 3.4 per cent of all circulated cheques in May, up from 2.8 per cent the previous month.
