AMMAN — The Jordan Chamber of Industry (JCI) has welcomed the signing of a letter of intent between the government, represented by the Ministry of Labour, and the International Labour Organisation (ILO) to launch a technical cooperation programme that supports and promotes decent work in the garment and textile sector.

The JCI said the agreement reflects the commitment of all partners to improve working conditions while enhancing the sector's competitiveness and sustainability, according to a JCI statement.

The chamber described the leather and textile manufacturing industry as one of Jordan's strategic industrial sectors, noting that it has helped establish the Kingdom as a regional manufacturing and export hub.

It noted preserving such position requires continued cooperation between the government, the private sector and international partners to strengthen compliance with international labour standards, improve working conditions, protect workers' rights and support the stability and growth of industrial enterprises.

"The chamber appreciates the efforts of the Jordanian government and the ILO to launch this programme, which supports the sector and strengthens confidence in it at both the local and international levels," said Ihab Qadri, JCI representative for the leather and textile industries sector.

He said dialogue and cooperation among all stakeholders remain essential to addressing challenges and ensuring the sector's long-term sustainability.

Qadri reaffirmed the chamber's support for initiatives that promote decent work across industrial facilities, stressing that a safe, healthy, motivating and fair working environment plays a key role in raising productivity, improving product quality and enhancing the competitiveness of Jordanian industry in global markets.

He urged industrial facilities to continue complying with national legislation and decent work standards while adopting best practices in occupational safety and health, fair employment and respect for workers' rights.

JCI representative added that fostering a workplace culture based on dialogue, cooperation and shared responsibility would support the sector's sustainability and preserve its strong reputation among international partners and importers.

Qadri said the JCI would continue working with the Ministry of Labour, the ILO and other stakeholders to support programmes and initiatives that improve working conditions, build the capacity of industrial enterprises and raise awareness of best practices.

He said these efforts would strengthen sustainable compliance while balancing workers' rights with the competitiveness of Jordanian industry.

Qadri said promoting decent work is not only a legal obligation but also a strategic investment in human capital that boosts productivity, supports sustainable economic growth and reinforces Jordan's position as a reliable and responsible industrial destination that upholds international labour standards and offers an attractive investment environment.
