UNICEF launches water distribution network project in Zaatari

AMMAN — UNICEF said on Thursday it launched the construction project of a water distribution network in the Zaatari Refugee Camp.

“In addition to the mobile wastewater treatment units launched last month, the operation of a water distribution network and a third borehole will drastically reduce operational costs, further promote the equitable use of WASH services for refugees in the camp, and conserve the environment,” a UNICEF statement said.

“The three boreholes will provide sufficient water for the camp and will lessen the burden on water resources outside the camp, which provides water for the community surrounding Zaatari camp,” the statement quoted Water Authority of Jordan Secretary General Tawfiq Habashneh as saying.

The approximately 83,000 residents of the camp receive water via trucks, with about 35 per cent coming from outside the camp, the statement added.
