AMMAN — South Amman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) personnel have arrested three suspected fraudsters, the Public Security Department’s (PSD) media centre announced on Monday.

The suspects reportedly defrauded a man out of $36,000 by promising to sell him gold at a price lower than the market rate, according to a PSD statement sent to The Jordan Times.

Upon receiving the gold, the victim discovered it was fake and worthless.

The PSD said the man filed a complaint, after which investigations started and led to identifying the suspects and their location.

Subsequently, CID personnel raided their safe house and detained the three men, who turned out to be wanted for other fraud and theft cases, according to the PSD.

After searching the apartment, the CID team found 10 pieces of counterfeit gold, the PSD said, adding that an investigation is still under way into the case.

The police warned the public against such fraud tactics, calling on people not to deal with those who sell gold or any other materials at improbable prices, since they could be fraudsters.

The PSD also called for reporting any similar incidents, and urged those who want to buy such valuable items to go to licenced shops to avoid falling victim to fraud.
