AMMAN — As part of the European Union’s engagement with youth and support to the development of a culture of debating, a series of youth debates are being held in four cities around Jordan during November and December.
The debates are organised through the Princess Basma Youth Resource Centre and tackle subjects of importance and relevance to the young people conducting them, according to an EU statement sent to The Jordan Times.
The debate topics include “whether acceptance of refugees into our communities helps to build a more tolerant society, or whether child labour is affecting the economic situation in Jordan”, the statement said.
The debates are being held in Jordanian Hashemite Fund for Human Development Community Development Centres in Irbid, Ajloun, Tafileh and Sahab, the EU statement added, noting that “the debaters themselves are young community members who have been trained by the Princess Basma Youth Resource Centre and have participated in numerous local and national debates.”
The events are open to the public and a discussion session following each debate allows all members of the community to express themselves on the topic.
These debates are part of an EU- funded programme implemented by the EU National Institutes for Culture (EUNIC) in Jordan.
EUNIC comprises the British Council, Instituto Cervantes, Institut Français, Goethe Institut, Embassy of Greece, Società Dante Alighieri and the Romanian Cultural Institute.
“The European Union is committed to encouraging open dialogue and debate among young people around the world,” the statement said.
