PM checks on projects at Irbid Development Area

By Petra - Oct 20,2014 - Last updated at Oct 20,2014

IRBID — Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour on Monday visited Irbid Development Area (IDA) and issued several directives to ensure a fresh start for the zone as a strong addition to the economy.

During a visit with a ministerial team to the IDA, which His Majesty King Abdullah launched in 2007, Ensour asserted the government’s commitment to attract education, healthcare, pharmaceutical and IT industries to the area, in line with the goals for which it was set up.

The zone, spread over around 3,000 dunums, is important for the northern governorates, the premier said.

The Jordan University of Science and Technology, which owns 1,000 dunums of IDA, will represent a nucleus for several economic and investment activities and a scientific hub in Irbid, 80km north of Amman, which is the second most populated governorate, he added.

Ensour, who was briefed on the progress of work at IDA, directed the concerned authorities to reconsider the plans for the zone, which is 20km east of Irbid city, and reduce the area allocated for housing and commercial services (currently 41 per cent of the overall area).

Moreover, he requested that the Social Security Corporation update its studies on the required infrastructure services, in accordance with the agreement between the government and the main developer of zone, the North Development Company, which is owned by the Social Security Investment Unit.

He also directed the ministries of municipal affairs and agriculture to look for an alternative location for the fruit and vegetables retail market, which was originally planned to be part of the IDA, to serve all the northern governorates.
