Turning challenges into opportunities

May 04,2016 - Last updated at May 04,2016

The King Abdullah II Fund for Development continues to carry out commendable work that can be emulated by other establishments around the country.

Those present at its annual celebration held in the presence of His Majesty King Abdullah on Wednesday at the Dead Sea were certainly satisfied to see progress in the fund’s work, which focuses on empowering the young women and men of the country through various means.

The fund operates through five main programmes: social outreach and awareness, capacity building, employability enhancement, entrepreneurship and the “We Are All Jordan Youth Commission”; 770,000 women from around the Kingdom enrolled in its projects and programmes, according to its chairman, Imad Fakhoury, who is also minister of planning.

The fund also saw 32,000 students implementing 100 voluntary initiatives around the country and 5,850 young women and men taking part in 160 seminars on “Roles Awaiting Us” programme where they debated issues of national concern.

In addition, on Wednesday, the fund launched the ForUS portal, aiming to transform work culture and improve job seekers’ approach to potential employers.

ForUS, which pronounced in Arabic means “opportunities”, aims to help young people trying to enter the labour market by offering them training, or by helping them find job opportunities or become entrepreneurs.

Furthermore, the fund expands the scope for voluntary activities for youth, not only to help them realise their potential and involve them in constructive work, but also to provide them with needed professional, social and voluntary experience they might need later on in their lives.

An interesting activity showcased at the ceremony outlined to the hundreds of people present, who included Royal family members, senior officials, parliamentarians, diplomats and representatives of various economic and social sectors, the digital gaming lab, which offers training that hones the skills of youth in Amman, Aqaba, Irbid and Maan.

The fund offers young people a badly needed platform to advance their skills in a constructive manner. It registered many success stories of young people it trained and who are now leaders in their sectors, either coaching others or productive members of society who offer job opportunities to many others.

The fund is a success story that shows how, through limited resources, a Jordanian organisation which invests mainly in the country’s greatest asset, the human element, can turn challenges into opportunities.

This is the motto raised by the fund this year when the kingdom celebrates the centenary of the launch of the Great Arab Revolt, which reminds us how our founding fathers turned their call to freedom into a constructive force of modernisation in a country that suffers from lack of resources and faces many challenges in a tumultuous region.
