A solemn duty

Aug 17,2017 - Last updated at Aug 17,2017

During a meeting with Palestinian dignitaries from Jerusalem and representatives of awqaf department in the holy city, His Majesty King Abdullah commended the exemplary steadfastness of Jerusalemites in defending Al Aqsa Mosque/Al Haram Al Sharif.

The King noted that the people of Jerusalem succeeded in defending the Islamic holy sites in Jerusalem amid frustrating Israeli attempts to divide the revered compound, especially Al Aqsa Mosque — the scene of recent incendiary tension between Palestinians and Israelis.

The King vowed to continue defending the Islamic and Christian holy shrines in Jerusalem and to preserve the historic and legal status quo against any Israeli encroachments. His Majesty also pledged to continue cooperating with the Palestinians in Jerusalem to foil any Israeli conspiracy to implement a temporal and spatial  partition of the holy sites.

The King's special status as the custodian of Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem is internationally recognised and Jordan is committed to preserve and defend this role by all available means.

Jordan cannot succeed in this effort without the cooperation of the Palestinians in Jerusalem. Likewise, the Palestinians cannot triumph over Israeli schemes without the support of Jordan.

No wonder, the Palestinians who attended the meeting with the King expressed recognition and appreciation of His Majesty’s support to their cause. Yet, as the Monarch pointed out to his audience, the struggle for holy sites in Jerusalem is a constant effort.

Jordan and the Palestinians must continue their combined and coordinated efforts to safeguard the rights and interests of not only the Palestinians in their holy sites but also the rights of all Muslims and Christians worldwide.
