Responding to school violence

Mar 22,2018 - Last updated at Mar 22,2018

Students, parents, teachers and school administrators are now complaining about the rapid rise of school violence and are naturally seeking a rapid solution. There is no rapid answer nor a ready-made panacea to the problem. There is simply no shortcut to addressing this phenomenon.

There are, in fact, many factors that led to this "epidemic" in schools, and when examined in depth, students who are violent to their peers or teachers are driven by the same frustrations and anger that can be found in society at large.

Rising cost of living, turbulent conditions in the region and perhaps the breakdown of traditional family ties may have contributed to students' "short fuses" and their rush to violent means to vent their anger and frustrations.

This makes the solution to the problem rather complex and multidimensional. The answer may have to include both preventive measures as well remedial actions. Raising awareness about the problem among students, parents and teachers is only the beginning of the long road to a solution. School authorities need to spearhead campaigns to raise awareness about the crisis and engage students and parents alike in a dialogue about ways to combat the problem and prevent it. The solution would have to be multidimensional in order to factor in all the relevant features of the complex issue.

Removing tensions from school campuses by engaging students in extra curricula activities and activating the role of students associations or clubs can lend support to the effort.

Whatever the way is to responding to school violence, all efforts need to be channelled before it develops into unmanageable proportions.

IT IS VERY VERY ENCOURAGING TO SEE THAT THE JORDAN TIMES HAS CHOSEN THIS TOPIC FOR AN EDITORIAL PRINT. AS THIS ARTICLE IMPLIES, PREVENTION IS ALWAYS BETTER THAN CURE AND BY
ANY STANDARD, JORDAN IS STILL FAR BETTER THAN MOST COUNTRIES ALL OVER THE WORLD WHEN IT
COMES TO VIOLENCE IN THE SCHOOLS. IN ADDITION, THE JORDAN TIMES EDITORIAL IS CORRECT TO STATE THAT THE PREVENTIVE MEASURES MUST FOLLOW A MULTI-FACTORIAL APPROACH STARTING FROM PARENTS AT HOME TO SPEAKING OUT AGAINST ALL THE CHAOS IN THAT REGION. WE SHOULD ALL REMEMBER THAT THE BEHAVIOR OF A CHILD IS A FUNCTION OF THEIR ENVIRONMENT. THESE CHILDREN CAN NEVER TURN BLIND EYES OF ALL THE VIOLENT EVENTS ARROUND THEM AND IN FACT COMMING FROM
ALL OVER THE WORLD GIVEN OUR ADVANCES IN TECHOLOGY AND INFORMATION SUPER HIGHWAY. TEACHERS
IN JORDAN SHOULD CONTINUE WITH THEIR PRESENT APPROACH IN HANDLING THESE TYPES OF SITUATION
BECAUSE THEY ARE DOING AN EXCELLENT JOB WHICH THEY CAN EVEN IMPROVE MORE. I AM NOT JUST WRITING ANOTHER ARTICLE BUT DOING SO BASED ON MY EXPERIENCE. MY SON GRADUATED FROM AMMAN NATIONAL SCHOOL AND THIS IS IN FACT WHERE THE FOUNDATION OF HIS SUCCESS WAS STARTED. I DO OWE AMMAN NATIONAL SCHOOL A LOT AS THEY HAVE PRODUCED AN IV-LEAGUE SCHOOLAR AND MADE ME PROUD FOR LIFE. THIS IS BECAUSE OF THE RULES AND THE SYSTEM OF THE ADMINISTRATION. I AM ALSO VERY HAPPY TO STATE THAT I KNOW MANY OF HIS CLASSMATES AND WHERE THEY ARE TODAY WHICH ARE DIRECTLY RELATED TO THE CULTURE AND THE MOTTO OF AMMAN NATIONAL SCHOOL. PARENTS LEADERSHIP COUNCIL OR ASSOCIATION SHOULD BE ENCOURAGED AND IN ALL CASES SHOULD BE SUPPORTED BY THE GOVERNMENT BY CREATING A SECTION WHITIN THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION TO TEAM UP WITH THE SAID (PTA) AND ATTEND THEIR MEETINGS WHEN AND WHERE TIME PERMITS. ALL PARENTS MUST WORK TOGETHER TO MENTOR AND LOVE THE CLASSMATES AND FRIENDS OF THEIR CHILDREN. AS A PARENT, I DID JUST THAT FROM OVER 7000 MILES AWAY IN BOSTON. I DID ENCOURAGE AND HOSTED MY SON'S CLASSMATES IN BOSTON EVERY SUMMER DURING THEIR FINAL YEARS IN HIGH SCHOOL. WHILE THAT WAS NOT EASY BECAUSE I HAD TO SIGN ALL KINDS OF PAPERS FOR THEIR VISAS, AND BE AT THE ARRIVAL HALLS TO RECEIVE THEM FROM AUTHORITIES BECAUSE THEY ARE STILL UNDER AGE. TODAY, I AM VERY HAPPY AND PROUD TO STATE THAT ALL THESE GROWN UP YOUNG MEN NOW ARE NOT ONLY VERY SUCCESSFUL BUT LAW ABIDEN CITIZENS.
IN SUMMARY, ALL THE ACTORS FROM TEACHERS TO ALL GOVERNMENTAL AGENCIES, PARENTS AND CITIZENS MUST JOIN HANDS TO CONTRIBUTE WHEN EVER AND WHERE EVER THEY CAN TO ELIMINATE ALL TREATS OF SCHOOL VIOLENCE.
