Putting TV programmes to use

May 06,2019 - Last updated at May 06,2019

Television networks in Jordan, and elsewhere in the region, are in a race to offer all sorts of television entertainment during the month of Ramadan, including dramas and comedies, as if the holy month is for "fun!"

Instead of amusement programmes for Ramadan, television stations are invited to offer spiritual programmes that aim to promote religious ethos and practices, which are plenty. There are many and varied socioeconomic issues that religion can offer support to, including helping the poor and the needy, over and above attending to prayer and meditation.

The country has many challenges that the government alone cannot address. The people are also called upon to lend support to the myriad economic and social problems facing the country. Ramadan is the season for solidarity and cooperation between the people and the government to join forces and respond to the many challenges facing the country.

Islam’s early days were full of incidents and stories that deserve to be put on the screen as reminders of the glories of Islam and its true messages. Islamic history across the past century-and-a-half is rich in glorious episodes and events that warrant portraying again and again so that worshippers can remember and appreciate the golden eras of Islam.

Television programmers, therefore, have plenty of subjects and issues directly related to Islam that can be presented to the public during the holy month, besides amusement subjects that can still be reproduced alongside mainly religion-oriented programmes.

The people are on edge these days, weary of what could lie ahead. Economic hardships are at the top of the people's anxieties. The public minds and spirits can be put at ease and become more optimistic about their future through the teachings of Islam. This is where television programmes can be put to use to address the concerns of the people, be they political or economic, and make them more optimistic about their future.

Jordan cannot lecture to various Arab television stations about what subjects and issues they should address during the holy month, but we can suggest to our own TV directors to remain loyal and faithful to the teachings of Islam during the fasting month.

The already incorporated spiritual television programmes in our television networks for the month of Ramadan are well appreciated, but putting the accent on them is what could be lacking.
