Prevention first

Oct 03,2018 - Last updated at Oct 03,2018

The King Hussein Cancer Foundation (KHCF) is truly making strong efforts to treat cancer, including in people who can ill afford the expensive medication and treatment for it.

For this purpose, the KHCF is now organising yet another "hike activity" to raise awareness about the disease and offer people an opportunity to contribute to the treatment of the unfortunate, who are inflicted by the disease but cannot afford the treatment.

There are many patients who cannot afford treatment of the disease and they have to be included in the national campaign for the treatment of cancer. Yet, what is woefully lacking in the KHCF’s crusades is any serious and sustained effort to "prevent" the disease in the first place.

Prevention of any health problem is always easier and cheaper than treating it and this is what the foundation needs to work on more effectively. Medical science knows now what contributes to this gave threat to life, among which carcinogen products added to food, including canned foods, vegetables and fruit. The foundation may want to target this primary cause of the problem. Smoking is also a major contributor to cancer, yet despite all efforts people still smoke and worse, are still allowed to smoke in public places.

The latest health finding points to sugar as also a primary factor in causing cancer. Yet, in many countries, including ours, there is hardly any effort to educate people about the dangers of sugar intakes into their body.

Good health all around is a good and effective way to combat cancer. Leading a healthy style of life can be a lifesaver, not only from heart disease but also from cancer.

We need to promote a culture for this purpose. Till now, there is hardly any dissemination of concerted news about what is needed for good health, except on sporadic basis. This has to change in order to cut down on cancer and other health hazards.

The cost of prevention is infinitely less than treatment. Why then have our health authorities yet to conduct periodic campaigns to raise awareness about causes of health hazards and how to prevent them in the first place. This is where the KHCF can also intervene and support all prevention campaigns.
