Partners in Jordan’s success story

May 22,2015 - Last updated at May 22,2015

There is more to the Middle East than stories of war, death, destruction, extremism and despair.

The World Economic Forum, convened at the Dead Sea, showcases a picture different from those shown by the global media every day, and attempts to give hope for a better future to the inhabitants of the region by offering various types of opportunities.

Delivering the opening address at the forum Friday, in the presence of several heads of state, political and business leaders and hundreds of participants from the region and other parts of the world, His Majesty King Abdullah said in the region “more than 350 million people are striving, economies are growing, youth are achieving, obstacles are being tackled”.

All these developments, the King said, allow for new possibilities and opportunities that should be grasped by all.

“This forum is about grasping these opportunities in building a future for this region by creating a framework for prosperity and peace,” the King told participants in this important meeting Jordan is hosting for the ninth time.

The call for peace and prosperity is needed now more than ever for, as the forum convenes in Jordan, conflicts rage all around it in the region, casting a shadow of uncertainty and despair.

Participants, as well as political and business leaders elsewhere, certainly realise that efforts should focus on building a better future for all inhabitants of the region, not just on finding political solutions to ongoing conflicts.

Improving the lot of people through proper planning and sound implementation of long-term development strategies and projects would no doubt give many hope in a better future and help counter extremism, terrorism and sectarianism, which are fed in no small measure by poverty, unemployment, lack of opportunities and hope, as well as by ignorance.

Jordan has crossed a long distance in this regard, and thus can be taken as a model by other countries of the region.

The Kingdom, small in size but big its strategic assets, has achieved successes that other bigger and richer countries of the region could not.

Now Jordan is inviting others to invest in its successes in various fields, in its long-term security and stability, in its well-educated human resources, its greatest natural asset, and in the opportunities available, which include a host of projects announced Friday on the sidelines of the WEF gathering.

Those investing in any opportunity in Jordan can not only get good returns on their investment, but also get the chance to contribute to the development of a country that is giving a lot to its region and other parts of the world, and to support all that the values the Kingdom stands for.

And for the country and its people, they are not only investors, but also partners in a success story, achieved despite the numerous obstacles and limited resources in a volatile region torn by sectarian violence and political conflicts.

Jordan striving for success deserves to be supported, and its steady progress and stability could be emulated by others in the region with, as result, the peace and prosperity its people have long desired.
