Jordan’s unshaken stance

Aug 01,2019 - Last updated at Aug 01,2019

His Majesty King Abdullah held talks with senior adviser to US President Donald Trump, Jared Kushner, on Wednesday. During the meeting, King Abdullah told Kushner what he has always told him: There is one, and only one, lasting solution to the Palestinian conflict and it is the two-state solution and the establishment of a free and independent Palestinian state in the West Bank along the June 4, 1967 lines, with East Jerusalem as its capital, period.

No matter how often Kushner may visit Jordan for talks with the King on the Palestinian case, he will always hear the same position over and over again. This firm and unshaken Jordanian position has not changed over time and it will not change ever. If anything, this principled Jordanian stance gets even firmer and deeper by the day, month and year.

So, what is new that Kushner brings this time in his bag? How long is it going to take to convince him that the declared Jordanian stance on the Palestinian cause is not about to change?

It is now apparent that with time, the Palestinians’ determination to enjoy their inalienable rights to a homeland on their soil gets stronger, not weaker.

The Palestinian yearning for a country of their own is getting stronger by the year, no matter how much oppression they can be subjected to by the Israeli occupation. Counting on time, therefore, to weaken the Palestinian resolve to have their homeland back will only backfire.

Jordan's own national security depends also on the realisation of this Palestinian quest for freedom from the Israeli occupation. Besides, the bonds between the Jordanians and Palestinians are deep and profound. The two peoples share the same history, culture, religion and destiny.

That is why Jordan insists, and will always insist, on restoring the full Palestinian rights in the West Bank, no matter how long this takes. Hopefully Kushner has heard this Jordanian message and will take it with him to Washington for President Trump to hear loud and clear!
