A day to remember

Nov 10,2019 - Last updated at Nov 10,2019

“Today, I also announce the expiration of the Peace Treaty annexes on Al Ghamr and Baqura and the imposition of our full sovereignty over every inch of those lands.”

With these words, His Majesty King Abdullah, in his Speech from the Throne at the 4th ordinary session of the 18th Parliament, announced the official termination and expiration of the two annexes in the 1994 Wadi Araba Peace Treaty with Israel relating to Baqura in the northwestern corner of the country and Al Ghamr, south of the Dead Sea.

As His Majesty was delivering his speech, the Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army raised Jordan’s flag in Baqura, fully restoring Jordan’s sovereignty over the area, which was received with joy among Jordanians of all walks of life.

Sunday was a historic moment for Jordan, as restoration of Jordan’s full sovereignty was a political triumph for the Kingdom’s leadership and for all Jordanians, who take pride in this national achievement.

Under the peace treaty, the two territories were recognised as part and parcel of Jordanian sovereignty and the "leasing" of the two areas was intended to last for only 25 years. The lease would have been extended for another 25 years had Jordan failed to exercise its right and option not to renew it, but after 25 years, the two areas are back under Jordan’s full sovereignty.

His Majesty’s heroic and historic announcement was received with a national sense of joy, relief and pride among all Jordanians.

This is a legitimate Jordanian right and this decision is close to the pulse of the street.

It is a major move by His Majesty at a time of difficult regional circumstances, uniting proud Jordanians behind their leadership.
