Climate change is real

Aug 05,2018 - Last updated at Aug 05,2018

A recent 300-page report by the American Meteorological Society and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration confirmed what most peoples across the globe have already observed, noticed and felt: that the world is, indeed, experiencing now abnormal weather patterns.

This year alone experienced an unusual number of storms, flash floods, drought spells, scorching heatwaves and record-low ice level in the Arctic. Many parts of Europe, Canada, the US and the Far East experienced unusual weather patterns, including tsunamis, earthquakes, wildfires, devastating floods and horrific volcanoes that brought havoc to life in many regions of the world. The culprit, of course, is planet warming, which is accelerating at an unprecedented rate due to a dramatic surge in greenhouse gases, causing climate change worldwide.

Yet, US President Donald Trump defied all the scientifically corroborated observations and findings by pulling out from the landmark 2015 Paris Climate Change accord. What adds insult to injury is the fact that the US remains the second leading polluter after China by emitting greenhouse gases at an alarming scale.

To be sure, there are many other nations that are also causing havoc to the globe's atmosphere, including India and a number of Latin American, African and Asiatic nations. Climatologists worldwide have found that the rapid global output of CO2 has quadrupled since the early sixties.

So, the question that arises is what would it take to awaken countries that still defy the laws of nature and continue to pollute the world's atmosphere with greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide and methane?

As nations still defy agreements on climate change with impunity, it is time to put the issue before the UN Security Council and adopt a binding resolution that aims to end the impunity that several pollutant countries still enjoy. Otherwise, the threat to life on planet Earth will soon reach a point of no return and threaten life as we know it.
