Holistic approach

Jul 16,2016 - Last updated at Jul 17,2016

Condemnations of the terrible terrorist attack in Nice, France, on July 14, that killed no fewer than 84 people and injured scores others continue to pour from all corners of the world, Jordan included.

At least 10 children and teenagers were among the dead, while close to 200 people have been injured.

His Majesty King Abdullah has sent his condolences to the families of the victims and to the French people.

The King condemned the terrorist attack and expressed Jordan’s solidarity with France.

The attack was reportedly carried out by a seemingly lone truck driver, a Tunisian who deliberately ploughed through people strolling around the Promenade des Anglais in the city and who were there only to enjoy the July 14 evening in commemoration of Bastille Day that ushered the French revolution in 1789.

In its reaction to the attack, Jordan has called for more determined efforts by the international community to combat terrorism.

The Nice attack was the latest in a number of deadly terror attacks that have targeted France over the past months, coming around eight months after gunmen killed 130 people in Paris.

France has declared a state of emergency, which empowers its security apparatuses to preempt criminal and terrorist activity.

In the face of these threats, the country must be supported as it works to maintain security and safeguard human rights at the same time.

At such times, the human right for security comes before all else, but a delicate balance must be sought to ensure that other rights are not disregarded.

The Kingdom has always called for a holistic approach to counter extremism, stressing that the focus on security is not enough.

Combating the spread of Daesh’s ideology among disgruntled young people through dialogue initiatives and further outreach is a necessary step to prevent their radicalisation and the spread of lone-wolf attacks around the world.
