AMMAN — A wanted suspect was killed on Saturday during a shootout with police in Maan, official sources said.

The suspect, who was not identified, was one of three men who allegedly robbed a gas station at gunpoint at dawn, Public Security Department (PSD) Spokesperson Lt. Col. Mohammad Khatib said.

“The three men entered the gas station and robbed it at gunpoint, then fled in a car,” he said.

Khatib added that the gas station’s employees gave police a detailed description of the vehicle, after which police issued an all-points bulletin.

“Officers at a checkpoint near Maan spotted the vehicle and when they attempted to stop it, the suspects drove into the city of Maan after a car chase with-police,” he noted.

Khatib said the suspects exchanged fire with the police, which resulted in the death of one of them.

“We managed to seize the vehicle and retrieved the stolen cash, a machine-gun, and some illegal narcotics,” he said, adding that none of the police officers were injured.

The victim’s body was taken to the National Institute of Forensic Medicine for an autopsy.

The two other suspects were arrested and are currently being questioned by the police, Khatib added.

Also Saturday, police arrested two armed suspects who were attempting to rob a shop in Ruseifa on Saturday, according to the PSD spokesman.

The two men resisted arrest but were apprehended after an exchange of fire with police, he said.

“One of the suspects was injured in the foot, apparently from his own gun, but no one was injured from our side,” Khatib said.

He added that both men are in custody pending further investigation.
