AMMAN — Social Security Corporation (SSC) on Wednesday said that the number of women subscribers to social security accounts for only 28 per cent of the total subscribers.

The corporation added that the percentage of female subscribers to social security is still low, standing at 357,000 out of 1.278 million total subscribers.

SSC said that female subscription to social security has increased from 25 to 28 per cent over the last three years.

The corporation said that enhancing women's participation in the economy requires a "decent and a woman-friendly" work atmosphere, which would contribute to reducing unemployment among Jordanian women, who, it added, have suffered an increase in unemployment that accounts for 27.5 per cent compared with 16.1 for men.

In the statement, released on the occasion of International Women's Day, SSC called for protecting women, and empowering them socially and economically.

The corporation urged women to inquire about their inclusion in social security at all institutions where they work.

The number of retired women has reached 34,000 out of 211,000 retirees, accounting for 16 per cent of the total number, the statement said.

SSC also said that the rate of early retirement for Jordanian women is high when compared to men, at an average of 49 years old with a JD344 pension salary.

The corporation stressed its keenness on increasing the rate of female participation in the economy to 27 per cent by 2025 in line with Jordan Document 2025, according to the statement.

SSC has allowed for the optional subscription of women who do not work continuously, with numbers standing at 22,675 subscribers.

The number who benefited from maternity insurance has reached 33,000 at a cost of JD43 million.
