AMMAN — Four Jordanian entrepreneurs reached the semifinals of the 2018 Global Innovation through Science and Technology Competition (GIST Tech-I), the Jordan Competitiveness Programme (JCP) said on Thursday.
The JCP urged Jordanians to vote for the entrepreneurs who were shortlisted, according to a statement posted on the programme’s official Facebook page on Thursday.
One entrepreneur is Shahd Douglas who has submitted a mobile application idea for TechTeb, which would enable patients to book home medical appointments instead of in-clinics through geographical location. The app would allow patients to choose healthcare providers from different medical specialties, which would increase efficiency and secure patients’ privacy, according to the website of the competition.
Abdalla Odat is another Jordanian entrepreneur participating in the competition with a startup idea titled “Sadeed Artificial Intelligence Automates Social Media Customer Service”.
Rasha Al Khateeb is competing with a project called “Escherichia Thunder Fall”. The project is concerned with generating electricity from waste using E-coli bacteria, which is both anaerobic and electrochemically active.
Jafar Albadarneh is participating in the competition with “ARtour”, a platform that enables museums and tourist sites to deliver a “brand-new” visiting experience using Augmented Reality Technology. The platform aims to “take the tourism industry to a new level and meet visitors’ expectations while still preserving sites cultural heritage and value”.
The GIST Tech-I Competition is an annual competition for science and technology entrepreneurs from emerging economies worldwide.
Aspiring innovators submit their ideas online which are then reviewed by experts and voted on by the global voting public in order to determine the finalists. US Department of State is inviting all former GIST Tech-I finalists to participate in the program to recruit and mentor the next generation of science and tech entrepreneurs.
This year, innovators from more than 80 emerging economies pitched their ideas and startups to GIST Tech-I The Alumni Mentors are narrowing down the number of competitors.
