LONDON/WASHINGTON — The United States and Britain expressed concern on Tuesday, over the disappearance of Saudi opposition journalist Jamal Kashoggi, who went missing while visiting the Saudi consulate in Istanbul a week ago.
Previously a prominent newspaper editor in Saudi Arabia and an adviser to its former head of intelligence, Khashoggi’s disappearance has sparked global concern.
Britain’s Foreign Minister Jeremy Hunt said on Twitter that he had met with Saudi’s ambassador to London on Tuesday, seeking “urgent answers” on the mysterious case.
Speaking at the White House on Tuesday, US President Donald Trump said he had not yet spoken with Saudi officials about it, but he intends to.
He was hoping the situation “will sort itself out”, but did not “like hearing about it” he said on Sunday.
“Violence against journalists worldwide is going up and is a grave threat to freedom of expression. If media reports prove correct, we will treat the incident seriously — friendships depend on shared values,” Hunt said.
Meanwhile, Khashoggi has not been heard from or seen since he entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul last Tuesday, according to his fiancée and friends.
Turkish officials told Reuters over the weekend that they believed he had been killed inside the consulate.
