AMMAN — Border Guards, army and Anti-Narcotics Department (AND) personnel have foiled an attempt to smuggle large amounts of narcotics out of the Kingdom, arresting two suspects, the Public Security Department (PSD) said Monday.

The authorities received a tip-off about suspects planning to prepare and hide a large quantity of illegal drugs in order to smuggle them abroad, subsequently forming a joint taskforce to gather intelligence on the suspects and their plans.

The taskforce identified two suspects involved in the operation, tracked them down and discovered that the narcotics were hidden in a house in Irbid, which AND personnel raided, the PSD said.

The house was raided after making sure the suspects were inside. They were arrested in possession of 123 kilogrammes of hashish, 2 kilogrammes of heroin and half a million narcotic pills, the PSD said, adding that the concerned authorities initiated investigations into the two suspects in order to refer them to the judiciary.

Border Guards have both the human and constantly-updated electronic capabilities to monitor the entirety of Jordanian territory, as well as an additional range extending for tens of kilometres across its borders, a senior army officer said at the beginning of March.
