Three killed, 107 injured in road accidents over span of 24 hours

AMMAN — Three people were killed and 107 injured in road accidents across Jordan in the span of 24 hours, the Civil Defence Department (CDD) said on Wednesday.

Some 226 accidents were recorded late Tuesday and early Wednesday around the Kingdom, and 470 people were admitted to hospitals in several governorates, said Lt. Mohammad Manaseer of the CDD’s media office.

“In Madaba, a 12-year-old girl was killed and three others were injured in a road accident when a truck and a vehicle collided in East Maamouniya area,” Manaseer added.

A 49-year-old woman, who resided in Amman, died from major injuries and fractures after she was run over by a car in Wihdat, the CDD officer told The Jordan Times in a phone interview.

The media office added that a 27-year-old Egyptian man was killed when a pickup truck and a car collided near Al Zameelah area in Karak Governorate, around 140km south of Amman. 

In another accident, 13 people were injured in a vehicle collision in the southern governorate and were taken to the Karak Public Hospital, the Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein Military Hospital and Al Qatraneh Medical Centre.

In Balqa’s Ain Al Basha area, a vehicle overturned, injuring five people, who were taken to Prince Hussein Bin Abdullah Hospital, officials added.

Thirty-four people have been killed and 875 injured in road accidents during the first three weeks of Ramadan, according to official figures.

Road accidents usually increase during the fasting month, but the number of accidents this year dropped compared to last Ramadan, when 43 people were killed in 898 accidents.

Speeding, reckless driving, congestion, wrongful overtaking and tailgating are the main reasons behind accidents this month, according to traffic officials.
