AMMAN — The Criminal Court prosecutor on Saturday was questioning several suspects in connection with the shooting incident of a student who was allegedly shot while at school in Amman’s Abu Nuseir neighbourhood on Tuesday.

The 16-year-old boy, identified as Adam A., was reportedly shot by a 26-year-old man while at school after a quarrel broke out between two students, police officials said last week.

“Police arrested four people, including two minors, in connection with the shooting incident that occurred during school hours,” a senior judicial source said.

Criminal Court Prosecutor Ammar Hneifat is currently questioning the two adult suspects and has “referred the minors to a juvenile prosecutor”, the judicial source told The Jordan Times.

“One suspect was charged with murder and the second with complicity in murder,” according to the judicial source, who added that initial investigations indicated the victim had “intervened to help a schoolmate who was fighting with another student about a ball”.

“An argument ensued and almost 15 minutes later two adults arrived at the scene and had another argument with Adam,” according to the judicial source.

The argument became heated and “Adam was shot once in the head”.

“We are trying to determine if the two adults came by coincidence or if they were called by one of the students,” the judicial source explained, noting that Hneifat is expected to summon “more witnesses to learn more about the incident before finalising the charge sheet”.

The condition of the victim was stable and attending doctors performed several surgeries to rescue him, the judicial source said, adding “he was shot in the forehead but his health condition is stable”.

Hundreds of people flocked to the blood bank last week following calls by the victim’s family to donate blood, the relative said.

“I have to say I was shocked and happy at the same time for the amount of people who called us to donate blood,” a relative of the victim, who preferred to remain anonymous, said.

He told The Jordan Times that people called from various governorates, expressing their willingness to come to Amman to donate blood.

“The phone number we listed would not stop ringing. The response from Jordanians who expressed solidarity and willingness to donate blood was really overwhelming,” the relative said, expressing his gratitude to the Jordanian football clubs that posted the family’s urgent call for blood.

“Several football clubs posted our call on their Facebook pages and, within minutes, our call went viral and the phone started ringing,” the relative recalled.
