Spokespersons of public agencies briefed on new Social Security Law

AMMAN –– The Social Security Corporation (SSC) on Tuesday hosted spokespersons of government agencies to acquaint them with the new Social Security Law, which was endorsed by Parliament late last year.

SSC Director General Nadia Rawabdeh said the session –– attended by Minister of State for Media Affairs and Communications and Government Spokesperson Mohammad Momani –– aimed at explaining major amendments to the law and the challenges facing the corporation.

An SSC statement said the event was part of a media campaign launched by the corporation to raise public awareness on the amendments and benefits included in the legislation, which went into effect on January 29 after being published in the Official Gazette.

SSC Media Director Musa Sbeihi said the new amendments are aimed at expanding the services of the corporation to cover more people under its umbrella, adding that social security services currently cover death, work injuries, maternity and temporary unemployment, among other cases.

The statement quoted Sbeihi as saying that the new law seeks to achieve financial sustainability for the corporation and to reduce insurance evasion by employers.

Earlier this year, he said there were 1.052 million active subscribers to the corporation’s insurance coverage, constituting around 70 per cent of the Kingdom’s labour force.

Highlighting the importance of Tuesday’s meeting, Momani urged all government agencies to acquaint the public with their laws and regulations.

The main task of spokespersons is to explain to the public the missions and duties of their ministries and entities, he added, stressing the need to build a professional and strong relationship with media outlets by providing accurate information and answering their queries.
