AMMAN — Police on Sunday said they arrested a man who was reportedly driving recklessly in a schoolyard in Irbid and struck a child over the weekend.

A video that went viral on social media purportedly shows a gray mini-bus driving in circles in a reckless manner inside a schoolyard.

Almost a minute later, a child screaming could be heard while the vehicle continues to be driven in a reckless manner.

“We arrested the driver shortly after the incident occurred in Azmi Mufti Camp School,” a senior traffic official said.

The official told The Jordan Times that investigators traced “the suspect to his house based on the license plate numbers”.

A second official added that the 14-year-old child was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was listed in fair condition.

“The child was struck because the driver lost control of his vehicle but, luckily, his injuries were not life-threatening,” the second official told The Jordan Times.

The mini-bus was seized by the police and the driver was referred to the administrative governor for further legal action, the second source added.

Al Rai Newspaper reported that Irbid Governor Radwan Etoum ordered the detention of the minis-bus driver on a JD100,000 bail, noting that Etoum considered the “driver’s reckless driving as ill-mannered and caused danger to the lives of people”.
