AMMAN — Her Royal Highness Princess Basma Bint Talal, Honorary Goodwill Ambassador for the UN Women and Chairperson of the Jordanian National Committee for Women (JNCW), said that Jordanian women are capable of obtaining top positions locally and internationally.

The princess made her remarks during a reception on Thursday night organised by UN Women and the JNCW on the occasion of appointing Sima Bahouth as the executive director of UN Women, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

Her Highness said that appointing Bahouth has important implications not only for Jordanian women, but for Arab women as a whole. She added that the appointment represents a “global recognition of the ability and competence of Arab women in serving the causes of their counterparts in all countries of the world”.

During the event attended by UN Women Jordan representative Ziad Sheikh, Princess Basma noted that in many countries the path ahead for women is still full of challenges.

She highlighted the importance of the concerted national and international efforts to confront these challenges to achieve a prosperous future for women, recognise their political, social and economic rights, empower them and enhance their role.

Her Highness praised the partnership between the JNCW, the UN Women in Jordan and the official bodies and civil society institutions concerned with women’s issues. She also praised the successes achieved by the partnerships to empower women and combat forms of violence against them in various fields.

Bahouth said her appointment would not have been achieved without the ‘great attention’ women have from the Hashemite leadership and its continued support in this regard.

JNCW Secretary General Salma Al Nims noted the importance of the strategic partnership at the national level with UN Women and its role in strengthening the committee’s work to formulate a national vision for women.
