AMMAN — The Public Security Department (PSD) on Tuesday launched its first bicycle units in tourist areas and beach zones in Aqaba, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The statement, carried by Petra, said that the police have started dispatching security patrols on bicycles in tourist areas in some of the regions of the Kingdom.

The PSD’s spokesperson, Lt. Colonel Amer Sartawi, added that the first phase was launched in the beach zones in Aqaba, to be followed by similar moves in other governorates.

Bicycle patrols are convenient and suitable to the nature of tourist areas, he said, ensuring the effective deployment of security patrols.

It will also help to better disburse protection and humanitarian services, the statement underlined.

Bicycles patrols and units are used in several countries and they contribute to providing a safer environment inside locations that are difficult for vehicles to enter, the police official said.

They will play a role in enhancing the security services and providing quick response and wider geographical coverage, in addition to easing access for PSD officers.
