AMMAN — A 52-year-old man was killed in the capital’s Sahab suburb late Sunday night after being struck by a rock while passing through an area witnessing riots, official sources said.

The riots erupted on Sunday following the death of a wanted man during a police chase earlier in the day, according to the Public Security Department (PSD).

“The police were chasing two men after they were caught attempting to rob an apartment,” PSD Spokesperson Major Amer Sartawi told The Jordan Times.

The suspects’ vehicle overturned, causing “the death of one person and the injury of a second”, Sartawi said.

“The second man was listed in good condition,” he added.

The victim’s body was transferred to the National Institute of Forensic Medicine for an autopsy, according to a second source.

Sartawi said police are investigating both incidents.

This is the second incident involving a police chase that ended with the suspect’s death in the past fortnight.

On November 20, a teenager was reportedly shot and killed during a police chase in the capital’s Wadi Seer neighbourhood. A police patrol approached the boy and asked for identification, but he said he had none, and allegedly assaulted the officers and started running. The officers chased the boy, then fired a warning shot, and when he refused to stop, they fired two shots at him, one of which struck him.
