AMMAN — Officials in Karak on Sunday described the relocation of bus station in the southern city as a necessary safety measure.

Meanwhile, merchants in Karak have staged protests recently against the new location of the bus station, saying it will negatively affect commercial activity in the city.

According to officials, the old location is situated along a deep valley that lacks railings to protect passengers.

“As of Monday, the new station will be relocated to the centre of the city,” Chief of Karak Police Department Colonel Sharhabil Obeidat told The Jordan Times over the phone on Sunday

“The facility meets all safety requirements,” he added.

Vice President of the Karak Chamber of Commerce Khaled Habashneh hailed the authorities’ response.

"Citizens will be satisfied with the new station, which adheres to standards and stands at a convenient location for most residents," Habashneh said.

The Transport Ministry's plan was implemented in coordination with the Karak Municipality, the Karak Chamber of Commerce and the Karak Police Department on a plot of land that can accommodate 10 buses at a time with essential services, such as sanitation facilities and traffic signs.

The Ministry of Transport was not available for comment despite several attempts for comment by The Jordan Times.
