Nasser, British delegation discuss water sector

AMMAN — Water and Irrigation Minister Hazem Nasser on Monday met with a delegation from the UK’s international cooperation ministry and discussed the challenges facing the water sector as a result of the Syrian crisis, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

Nasser highlighted the issue of water distribution in the northern regions, which has witnessed a 40 per cent increase in the demand for water, due to the large influx of refugees.

He noted that a number of projects still require financing to overcome water supply problems.

The delegation was briefed on plans implemented to improve the water sector, through partnerships with the private sector, to administer and develop water resources.

Nasser expressed appreciation for the support of the donor countries to Jordan, especially the UK, to face the “exceptional challenges” facing the Kingdom.

The delegation stressed the UK ministry's keenness to cooperate in the field of modern water resource administration. UK support to the sector has amounted to £30 million, according to Petra.
