AMMAN — Jordan on Tuesday participated in an open dialogue session of the UN Security Council on the conditions in the Middle East, including those pertaining to the Palestinian cause.

The Kingdom’s statement, delivered by Jordan’s permanent representative to the UN Mahmoud Hmoud, stressed that the peace process has two options.

The first option is a “just peace” that results in the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the pre-1967 lines with East Jerusalem as its capital, according to the two-state solution, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The second option is the continuation of the conflict that will be deepened by the continuous violations of Palestinian’s rights and the illegitimate steps that undermine all opportunities to realise peace, the statement added.

The statement also stressed the rejection of all illegitimate Israeli procedures that would undermine the two-state solution and threaten opportunities to achieve peace in the region.

The statement reiterated Jordan’s continuous efforts, based on the historical Hashemite Custodianship over Islamic and Christian holy sites of His Majesty King Abdullah, to preserve and protect holy sites and maintain the historical and legal status quo.

The statement also reviewed the efforts of Jordan and Sweden to hold the UNRWA international conference next month to mobilise support for the UN agency and enable it to offer its vital services as mentioned in its UN mandate.
