AMMAN — The Criminal Court prosecutor on Monday charged a 29-year-old man with premeditated murder and attempted murder in connection with a shooting incident outside a prison in the Rmeimin area, official sources said.

The suspect reportedly fired several rounds from an automatic weapon at two brothers in their vehicle shortly after they visited their brother in prison, a senior official source said.

The third brother is in prison for murdering the suspect’s brother.

“It is clear to us that it is a revenge incident but we are still investigating the case,” the official source said.

The suspect, a Madaba resident, drove to his hometown and turned himself in to the police, a judicial source said.

"On the way to Madaba the suspect's vehicle broke down and he stole another vehicle and drove to the Madaba police station where he handed the weapon to officers on duty," the source told The Jordan Times.

In his initial testimony to police, the suspect claimed that he was driving in the street near the prison and saw the two brothers in a pickup truck.

"The suspect used his automatic weapon to fire 30 rounds at the pickup truck, killing one person and critically injuring his brother," the judicial source said.

The second victim remains hospitalised in critical condition, the source added.

Criminal Court Prosecutor Ramzi Nawayseh issued orders for the detention of the suspect at a correctional and rehabilitation centre pending further investigation into the incident.

Nawayseh also charged the suspect with possessing an illegal weapon.
