AMMAN — The Criminal Court's prosecution office on Tuesday charged a 27-year-old shepherd with manslaughter in connection with the stabbing of his younger sister a day earlier in Karak governorate, official sources said.

The 25-year-old victim reportedly received a single fatal stab wound to the chest allegedly by her brother while at their family's home on Monday, the general attorney at Criminal Court Ihsan Salamat said.

Initial investigations indicated that the victim engaged in a heated argument with the suspect and he allegedly "grabbed a knife he had on him because he is a shepherd and stabbed her once in the chest", Salamat told The Jordan Times.

The suspect then headed to the nearest police station and turned himself in, according to Salamat.

The senior judicial official added that the victim's family informed investigators that their daughter was suffering from "mental problems for a long period and was supposed to visit a physician in Amman on Monday".

The victim's family claimed that their daughter "started screaming and yelling that she does not want to go see the physician in Amman", according to Salamat.

The suspect claimed that his sibling's refusal and the fit she threw towards her family "angered him and he drew a knife that was on him and stabbed her with it", Salamat added.

The general attorney added that "investigators plan to check if the victim had previous medical records that prove that she had suffered from mental problems".

"We want to make sure that this was the real motive behind the incident by reviewing her mental medical history as her family claimed. This will help us corroborate their claims," Salamat noted.

A second senior official told The Jordan Times investigators seized the knife that was reportedly used in the stabbing incident and sent it to the Criminal Lab for further analysis.

"The prosecution office also ordered that blood and tissue samples be taken by from the victim to be analysed at the Criminal lab," the second senior official told The Jordan Times.

The suspect was ordered detained by the Criminal Court's prosecution office for 125 days at a correctional and rehabilitation centre pending further investigations into the incident.
