AMMAN — Members of the Lower House’s Education and Culture Committee on Monday discussed a recent decision by the University of Jordan (UJ) to raise fees for its postgraduate and parallel programmes and its impact on the educational process and underprivileged students.
During a meeting with Higher Education Minister Amin Mahmoud and UJ President EkhleifTarawneh, deputies raised questions on the reasons for the raise and the losses incurred as a result of opening UJ’s Aqaba branch.
MP Mohammad Qatatsheh said the committee wants to know the reasons for the decision, noting that the government promised the House that it will not raise university fees.
Tarawneh explained that the decision was taken to help the university overcome financial difficulties and offset its budget deficit.
