SOUTHERN JORDAN VALLEY — Their Majesties King Abdullah and Queen Rania on Wednesday visited Ghor Fifa and checked on development projects offered to residents of the area.

During the visit, King Abdullah issued directives to build, and conduct maintenance for several houses for needy families in the area, and install solar systems for power generation to help reduce the electricity bill for several households.

His Majesty ordered implementing several projects and initiatives in Ghor Fifa and supporting civil society institutions that work on contributing to local development and creating opportunities and jobs for the residents of the area, located some 160km to the south of Amman and home to about 3,000 residents.

The visit by Their Majesties included Ghor Fifa kindergarten, which is supported by the Friends of Jordan Society, where they were briefed on services it offers and activities for the children in the area.

Hala Majali, the society’s coordinator, briefed Their Majesties on the kindergarten, which educates 42 pupils and provides services at no charge, in addition to textbooks and uniforms.

The kindergarten has created several jobs and is working on conducting several activities such as providing free tutoring for Tawjihi students on several topics and holding free medical days and providing grants to university students, Majali said.

Majali said the society offers several types of assistance as well as loans and grants, adding a public library was created in Ghor Safi area that includes some 30,000 books.

King Abdullah issued directives for rehabilitating the kindergartens yard and turning it into a public park and furnishing it with necessary equipment for a play area.

King Abdullah and Queen Rania also visited a project for wool manufacturing supported by the Princess Taghreed for Training and Development Institute, where they toured the facility and were briefed on the manufacturing process.

During the visit, Aghadeer Jweihan, the institute’s director, said the project started in 2016 and it has created 19 jobs for local residents.

The products, she said, are exported to some European markets.

On challenging facing the project, she said that the facility is rented which limits the potential for increasing production and creating additional jobs for women in the area, adding that work on building a new permanent facility for the project will start soon.

In this regard, King Abdullah issued directives to provide the new building with all necessary equipment to help the project expand, develop its products and create new jobs.

Fayzah Bawat, one of the beneficiaries of the project, said she is happy with her job and the working environment.

“Working in this project helped me improve my financial situation…. Although I am 65 years old, I feel productive and useful,” Bawat said on Wednesday.

King Abdullah voiced his appreciation for efforts exerted by the private sector and NGOs that aim at improving the living conditions of residents of Ghor Fifa and combating poverty and unemployment.

His Majesty commended efforts by the Arab Potash Company and its support for development projects in the area and financing a project to provide solar system for 442 houses to generate electricity and highly valued projects supported by the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature that support local development.

Their Majesties also checked on the situation of the family of Ibrahim Zahran, a needy family of seven who live in the area.
