Kenyan woman charged with manslaughter of Sudanese man

AMMAN — The Criminal Court prosecutor on Tuesday charged a 31-year-old Kenyan woman with manslaughter in connection with the alleged murder of a Sudanese refugee in downtown Amman on Monday, a senior judicial source said.

The victim, identified by officials as Bakri H., owned a barbershop with an Iraqi man. He was found dead at his house in the downtown area on Sunday.

The Kenyan woman became the prime suspect in the incident because “she was living with him and our investigations indicated that she was the last person to see him alive”, the senior judicial source told The Jordan Times.

In her initial confession in front of the authorities, “the woman claimed that she arrived home and saw the victim holding a knife and claiming that he wanted to kill himself”, according to a second official source close to the investigation.

“The suspect claimed that she ran towards him in an effort to stop him but he stabbed his arm and slashed his throat,” the source said.

The suspect added that she “attempted to stop the bleeding and it most probably caused the victim to suffocate”.

However, the judicial source said that the prosecution office “did not believe she was telling the truth”.

“There were several bottles of alcohol at the crime scene and forensic experts detected bruises around his mouth, an indication that someone blocked his air path. There were also bruises near his neck, a sign that someone used their hands to strangle him manually,” the judicial source maintained.

The judicial source said that Criminal Court Prosecutor Mohammad Smadi is now waiting for the lab results, including the presence and level of alcohol in the victim’s blood, and “will summon the suspect from her holding cell to question her again”.

The suspect has been ordered to be held at a women’s correctional and rehabilitation facility by Smadi for 15 days pending further investigation and questioning of more witnesses in the incident.
