AMMAN — The UN member states adopted on Wednesday a ministerial declaration affirming that sustainable development cannot be achieved without peace and security and that peace and security are at risk without sustainable development.
164 countries voted in favour of the ministerial declaration, including Jordan, and opposed by the United States and Israel, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
The declaration, issued at the conclusion of the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), underlined the need to upscale efforts to resolve and prevent conflicts, and to support post-conflict countries.
The declaration also called for more effective measures in accordance with international law, in order to “remove the obstacles that hinder the full realisation of the self-determination right for peoples under colonial and foreign occupation, and which continue to adversely affect their economic and social development as well as their environment”.
The declaration reaffirmed the commitment to the effective implementation of the Agenda for Sustainable Development, agreed upon by world leaders who pledged to achieve its 17 goals by 2030, in order to improve human life and protect the planet earth.
Minister of Environment Nayef Fayez headed the Jordanian delegation and delivered a statement at the HLPF.
