Jordan to showcase local products in Qatar expo

AMMAN — Jordanian industrialists, traders and investors will showcase local products at an exhibition in Qatar later this year, the Amman Chamber of Industry (ACI) said on Sunday.

Around 150 Jordanian companies are expected to take part in the three-day exhibition, which opens on December 14, said ACI board member Fathi Jaghbir, adding that around 60 companies had registered in the last week.

Participation costs JD4,500 for each company, but the Jordan Investment Commission is covering JD2,000 per company and the ACI is contributing JD1,000 per participant to encourage companies to take part, said Jaghbir.

The ACI official noted that Qatar’s efforts to develop its infrastructure and facilities, in preparation to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup, presented an opportunity for growth for Jordanian businesses in the emirate.

Hosting the international football championship is contributing to “huge” architectural expansion and growth in the performance of businesses in various sectors, he explained, adding that the current emphasis on the construction sector would soon spread to the food industry.

The search for non-traditional markets and faraway for local products should not distract attention from nearby markets, such as Qatar and other Gulf Cooperation Council countries, Jaghbir said, noting that Qatar’s proximity facilitates the transport of goods for low customs duties.

Doing business in non-traditional markets needs time for the private sector and the government to address the challenges regarding transport and customs fees, he added.

In addition to the exhibition, a Jordanian-Qatari investment forum will take place to examine future partnerships and investment opportunities.

Jaghbir highlighted the chamber’s plans to repeat the Qatar exhibition in Saudi Arabia in the near future.

Registration for the exhibition is open until the number of participants reach the exhibition’s capacity of 150.
