AMMAN — Jordan has promised Iraq to facilitate the return of Iraqi refugees who fled to the Kingdom following the capture of the border areas by Daesh militants in 2014, a diplomat said.
In a statement sent to The Jordan Times on Saturday, Iraq’s Ambassador to Jordan Safia Al Souhail said she has discussed the issue with officials and coordinated with Anbar Governor Suhaib Al Rawi, who is visiting Amman.
The main problem facing the refugees is the fines accumulating on them for overstaying in the Kingdom, especially since they were not officially registered with the UNHCR and have been treated as guests.
No figures were available on the number of this group of Iraqis coming from Anbar.
The total number of registered Iraqi refugees in the country is 53,136.
