AMMAN — The Education Ministry on Wednesday announced that education directors across the Kingdom are authorised to declare Thursday a day off, depending on weather conditions in their respective areas.

Ministry Spokesperson Walid Jallad called on education directors to coordinate with school principals and administrative governors to make the right decision that ensures the safety of students and teachers, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

He also called for immediately informing the ministry headquarters of any decision to announce a day off.

Meanwhile, areas in Karak’s Southern Mazar District witnessed heavy snow Wednesday morning, which prompted Talal Majali, the director of the district’s education directorate, to authorise school principals to suspend schooldays in the area if deemed necessary.

On Thursday, temperatures are forecast to drop further as the effect of a cold air mass continues, with heavy rainfall forecast around the Kingdom, accompanied by thunder and lightning.

Snow is expected to fall on areas 900m above sea level.

Temperatures in the capital are forecast to range between a high of 6°C and a low of -1°C, according to the Jordan Meteorological Department, which also warned of frost formation after midnight.

Mercury levels are expected to range between a high of 2°C and a low of -3°C in hilly areas, while in Aqaba, they are forecast between 17°C and 7°C.

In the Jordan Valley, temperatures will be between a high of 17°C and a low of 4°C on Thursday, while they will range between 8°C and -2°C in the badia, the department said.
